The strange whispering hadn't bothered him, but now, six years later, in the grimy mud trenches of the Somme front, it returned. He was sat in the dugout with his sketchpad, drawing a shattered tree in No Man's Land, when he heard it, barely audible. He tried to make some reasoning out of it, but Sergeant Conran blew his whistle. It was assault time. He followed Beardsley and Yarwood towards the edge of the battlefield, trying to cut round the outside. Yarwood's neck was blown off. Beardsley collapsed wounded. He moved on. He could not stop now, not after all his friends had gone through. He crouched behind a rock and waited for a chance to leap into the German lines. Until such a time came, he could do nothing but wait.
