At the front of the boat, Josh sat sheltering from the choppy water. He looked a little sick. The Captain spoke to him - "Private Smith, what's the matter?" In response, Josh vomited. We were nearly there. The ramp was lowered and we ran out. Instantly, there was a hail of machine-gun fire spraying from the cliff-face. We split into two groups. I dived into a hole in the beach and Josh and Ben joined me quickly. We just lay there, waiting. Men were screaming, dying, but the Eight were, as far as we knew, untouched. One of the twins found us - we didn't know which one, his face was so covered in mud. But then we left the beach and began to cross a field. We ran, but about two thirds of the way through there was the boom of a landing shell and Ben was flung into the air. He landed and lay motionless. We all knew it. Private Harrison was dead.
